Hypersonic Plane

An experimental plane managed to record-breaking hypersonic flight Mach 6 or six times the speed of sound for more than three minutes. The previous record was just over 12 seconds. The plane called the X-51A Waverider was originally installed in the aircraft wing B-52 Stratofortress in southern California on Wednesday morning, May 26, 2010. X-51A is then released, jet engine and accelerates to the speed of Mach 6. He flew for 200 seconds at that speed until the later loss of acceleration.

"We are delighted to have successfully tested the X-51 hypersonic A for his first mission," said Charlie Brink, the X-51A program manager Air Force Research Laboratory in Ohio, the United States.

"We equate technological leap this machine is equivalent to leap after the World War II from propeller to jet-engine aircraft," said Brink.

Waverider was built by Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne and Boeing Co.. Joe Vogel, director of hypersonic Boeing said, "This new world record and provides the foundation for several hypersonic applications, including access to space, reconnaissance, global reach and commercial transportation."

Currently there are four X-51A aircraft that have been developed. The other three will be tested this fall. "There is no perfect test," said Brink. "And I'm sure we'll see an anomaly that must be addressed before the next flight."
